Pattern can be described as a visual element that is repeated, arranged or that contains corresponding parts/designs/components that offer visual clues to an underlying order. Pattern, both ancient and modern, is everywhere. Three Vancouver Island mixed media artists explore pattern and how it has evolved in their work.
Janice Hofman uses both repeated and random patterns in her work and uses upcycled materials to explore colour, texture, words and layers of media and meaning.
Penny Maday Ciochetti combines both modern and ancient patterns from sacred geometry, Islamic art, Italian architecture and from Leonardo da Vinci’s sketchbooks.
Barb Mortell was a quilt maker for over 30 years and has now turned her hands and heart to mixed media paintings, often inspired by a simple patchwork design.
