This is an introduction class for students who are interested in learning how to use colour pencils to draw portraits. This class covers the use of colour in creating shape and form, focusing on skin textures, eyes and mouth. We’ll look at skin tones from undertones to highlights, we’ll learn how to choose colours and how to successfully layer colours in transparent methods to create accurate skin colour and texture. Along the way we’ll explore various techniques of details such as how to make eyes shine, how to create realistic lips with texture, and how to use tonal ranges to create form and visual interest. Students will be given tips and tricks on using colour pencils, as well as a discussion on layout, papers and other important tools when working with colour pencils. Students will be given access to online videos and opportunity for feedback through zoom or online video feedback of all their work.

About the instructor:
Jeannette Sirois is a full time practicing visual artist working with colour pencil and graphite on paper. Having created work for public installations, gallery exhibitions, and private and public collections. She works on large scale botanical and portrait drawings. In her words: I’m fascinated by the details of plants, the connection we have with them, and the loss we experience with the speed of our lives, and the destruction of the environment. I love exploring new plant life and I’m working to understand how plants become extinct and or destroyed on mass by consumerism, harvesting, deforestation, and more. As I move forward with my art I will be exploring more of these issues in coming works.
I hold a Diploma in Design, a BFA with distinctions from Concordia University in Montreal, Art Teacher Certification, and an M.Ed. from UBC, a member of BAC (Botanical Artists of Canada).
Currently, my work can be purchased through my studio, or through West End Gallery in Victoria or Edmonton www.westendgalleryltd.com
