Are you ready to take your art outdoors and capture the beauty of nature on canvas? Join us for a one-day workshop where you’ll learn everything you need to know to prepare for successful plein air painting sessions.
In this workshop, we’ll start by guiding you through the process of building your own affordable and personalized plein air painting box. We’ll help you choose the essential tools and materials that suit your style and budget, ensuring you have everything you need to create stunning outdoor paintings.
Once your kit is assembled, we’ll dive into the basic skills necessary for successful plein air painting. From composition to managing light changes and weather considerations, you’ll learn how to overcome the challenges of painting outdoors and create captivating landscapes.
Overview of the day
9:30 am – 12:30 pm : Building Your Personalized Painting Box:
We’ll assemble a simple, low-cost art-box to take outdoors . In addition discuss the essential supplies you’ll need for plein air painting and how to choose the right materials for your style and budget. From easels to brushes, paints to palettes, we’ll cover it all.
12:30 pm – 1:00 pm: Lunch break (timing approximate)
1:00 pm – 4:00 pm: Basic Skills for Successful Plein Air Sessions:
- Composition: Learn how to compose your painting to create visually engaging landscapes. We’ll explore techniques for framing your subject, creating depth, and achieving balance.
- Using a basic Colour Palette : How to achieve results with a carefully selected palette
- Managing Light Changes: Outdoor lighting can change rapidly. Discover how to observe and capture the effects of changing light on your subject, from dawn to dusk.
- Weather Considerations: Painting outdoors means dealing with unpredictable weather. We’ll discuss how to adapt to different weather conditions, from sunny days to overcast skies and even rain.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll feel confident and prepared to venture outdoors with your painting kit and create beautiful plein air pieces.

kimmerT is a storyteller who uses the fine art of an oil painting to communicate messages.
As a graduate from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) University, kimmer’s strength as a contemporary artist has been developed by intense study (art history, painting and drawing techniques), skills development, and concept creation. kimmer previously taught drawing class in Jasper and recently for CVAC Figure drawing and Art Dabble.
