Discover the magic of Batik using wax and dyes on 100% white cotton fabric.
You will learn the different processes of batik:
The waxed areas of the fabric will resist the dyes, while the unwaxed areas will take them up. Waxing the details can be a slow process, but the application of colour is instant and magical.
Learn how to build up a design starting with the lightest colour, building up to the darkest. Create textures by crackling and spattering the wax; and how to remove wax at the end of the process, to reveal a beautiful textured design or picture. Watch how your batik painting evolves in front of your eyes. It’s like watching a photograph being developed.
Participants will leave with one or two finished pieces of art.

Born of settlers in unceded Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik Territory, I grew up on the East Coast of Canada and “fell into batik” while observing a friend composing a market scene with wax and dyes. That first enchanting evening of story-telling shaped my award-winning, core expressionist approach. Through this, my focus has been on the thinking and emotions generated within viewer, not just the work itself. To this end, I have developed a vigorous, organic style stimulated by the extremes of any experience outside my comfort zone. My work is also strongly informed by university degrees in Music and Library and Information Science, and professional work as an archivist.
