The Cowichan Valley Arts Council is looking for creative youth event coordinators to help lead our summer art camps for kids. The ideal candidate will have some experience working with children, a good work ethic and will have some interest in the arts.
You will be one of two students leading the camps and will work with professional artists to deliver the programs. CVAC will hire two students for 10 weeks to coordinate youth events for the summer. The position will run from June 21 to Aug. 27, 2021. The wage is $16/hour.

Responsibilities:
- Develop goals and activities for the youth events including 6 week-long summer arts camps
- Design and evaluate activities to represent CVAC at markets and festivals one day a week. The summer students will use the pop-up tent and bring art activities to the festival.
- Run six full-day week-long camps for 6 -10 year old children out of CVAC’s Portals Studio.
- When the final camp is finished the summer students will pack away all the supplies from the summer activities and refresh the studio and gallery area.
- Complete an end of summer evaluation report
Summer Camps
The Cowichan Valley Arts Council will be partnering with the Cowichan Community Centre in providing the camps for 6-10-year-old children. These activities will be designed and evaluated by the summer students. The campers will also walk to nearby parks to ensure that they can enjoy some sunshine and fresh air. There are six different themes for the Art Fanatic camps: puppets, fibre art, 3-D sculpture, recycled art, nature art and performing arts/drama. The summer students will consult with local artists who will volunteer to demonstrate different art forms. The summer students will organize and facilitate a weekly exhibition for the campers to showcase their work at the end of each week of camp. For performing arts camp, you will use a script with an age appropriate, community building message the campers will cover all aspects of creating a performance. The script has been chosen for the messages but also because it is written in a conversation style which should make learning the parts much easier. Campers will begin with choosing a part, learning skills on performing in a character and practicing together. They will also create simple costumes and a set that will lead to a final performance on the last day of camp.
