Victoria Amazonica, Nymphaeaceae, the largest water lily in the world, originates from the Amazon and is the national flower of Guyana, depicted on the coat of arms. It was originally called ‘Victoria Regia’ after Queen Victoria. Fascinatingly, it blooms for 48 hours, white the first night, pink the 2nd and is pollinated by beetles. This photograph was taken in Mexico. I love the balance of colour, light, shape of the bud and surrounding pads prior to its opening.
