Sketching is the foundation to many of my paintings. Some sketches begin as doodles and remain just that, while others develop into a composition or become more detailed as the subject draws me in. This pastel sketch of a vase of sunflowers was a spontaneous response to a peaceful afternoon sitting outside at the patio table. It has a vibrancy that might otherwise be lost to more detailed study.
