550-S5, 18.5cm h x 16.5cm d, Clay $95
This pot was fast fired in a clay container called a saggar to just under 1000 degrees F (approx. 500 degrees C). Combustible organic materials, wire and chemicals such as copper sulfate and Epsom and table salts were packed around the pot inside the saggar to produce the unique and varied effects. Unlike raku firing the kiln is allowed to cool naturally.Saggar firing is unpredictable and can be frustrating; after my initial successes, there were several years of disappointments but recently have had some satisfying results. (Cautious “Yay!”) Pottery fired in this way is decorative and not meant to hold water.
