Breath Before Flight

Watercolour and Ink
50.8 cm x 60.96 cm

I created this piece during the early days of isolation, when feelings of hopelessness and a longing for the outside world were inescapable. The ribcage represents what came before: the past, an empty memory. The robin rests on the shoulder, collecting herself, before returning to the sky; she is both the present and the future. Robins symbolizes rebirth and new beginnings, and in European mythology, robins are a symbol of divine sacrifice. It was thought that the small, red-chested creatures carried the spirits of the dead on a journey to rebirth. The belief that there will be better times ahead is what keeps my spirit alive, and so I wanted to make a piece that showed a glimmer of hope in what feels like a sea of negativity
