Val Konig is well known on Salt Spring Island art scene, teaching watercolour and acrylics year-round in her studio. Konig taught painting through summer seminars of fine arts for nine years (1993-2002) with friend and colleague Libby Jutras. She now teaches her own summer “plein air” workshops, drawing students from across Canada and the United States, many of whom attend year after year. “For many years I have been focusing on light and its effect on subject. Back-lighting and cast shadows are particularly exciting for me. Since light (or its absence) can affect us all very powerfully, it will always be a major consideration in my paintings.” I paint in oil because of its versatility as oil makes it easy to create free flowing brush strokes as well sharp lines. My style is still evolving but it usually includes a centre focus portrait with an explosion of colour and background full of abstractions to represent the emotion.
