My pieces are done in an art form known as collage, mixed media or altered art. I have recently been experimenting with encaustic wax as well. I like to use vintage and antique papers such as cathedral plans, old maps, old letters, vintage sheet music and old receipts in the backgrounds of my pieces. I then layer on the vintage photos, paint, inks and charcoal. I add found treasures from my junk shop collection to complete the pieces. This can inculde old keys, gears, watch parts, typewriter keys, glass eyes etc.. I usually work in sets and like to make 3 to 6 pieces within a theme to be displayed as a group, although I will sell the pieces individually. Most of my pieces are on wooden blocks fives inches square but that varies. I have done some bigger canvasses. I have done custom work for clients. I like to combine photos, papers and found treasures in surprising ways. I like to expression emotion and humour in my work. I am particularly fond of antique anatomy photos, insects, architecture and birds.
Vintage glass doll eye, antique optical lenses, bees wax, vintage clay poker chip, vintage small glass bottle, vintage anatomy images, vintage optical chart, vintage stop motion photography, vintage medical papers, antique bee keeping book pages, vintage apothecary label, distress ink, black gesso, matte medium, wooden blocks, cork board.
I have been working in this art form for about four years. It has evolved through trial and error.I have taken some workshops from Victoria artist Alwen Rambo who has been a positive influence and who has generously shared techniques and materials with me. I have shown my work at various venues in the Valley over the past 2 years including Java World, Teeny Tiny art show and Coffee on the Moon.
I was born and raised in the Cowichan Valley. I like to travel and have found many of my treasures in the flea markets of Paris and London. I live in Maple Bay village with my family. My studio is in my home. I teach art and many other important things to seven year olds here in Duncan.
